It seemed to me then and does today that SKYHAWKS was very much a cartoon version of SKY KING, seen for years previously live action on SatAm. On that show, which began on radio, the hero was Schuyler King, adventuring with his niece Penny and nephew Clipper. The WIKIPEDIA entry mentions that Sky King was likely based on a real person, Jack Cones.

I used to watch Sky King. But I don't remember any of the actual stories, which is kind of surprising, since the IMDB says it was still on until I was 15 years old. (I thought I was much younger when it ended, until I looked it up just now.) About all I do remember is the opening lines (which practically everybody my age remembers). The niece and nephew are complete blanks to me.
But I recall it as a western, basically. Sheriffs, crook chasing, that sort of stuff, but horses were traded out for modern transportation. I don't recall rival aviators, or lots and lots of family members involved. (According to the IMDB (which characterizes it as "Western, a plane and a blonde"), Clipper was only in 19 of the 72 episodes.)
There was lots of aviation adventure. I don't see enough points in common with this one to be worth mentioning.
But thanks for bringing it up. Looking it up has been a trip down Memory Lane.
