You mentioned that your email is down so I'm writing this here. In the new Galtar article, paragraph 4, sentence 4 says that Galtar wanted the sword to complement the shield that he'd already stolen. Galtar was the hero; he already had the sword. It was Tormack who stole the shield and coveted the sword.
